MVNOs' Changing Impact on the Wireless Market

This IDC Market Perspective examines the potential for mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) from traditional cable operators to disrupt the competitive dynamic for wireless service among consumer and business subscribers. Mobile virtual network operators from traditional cable companies have posted significant gains in terms of subscribers since launching back in 2018, culminating in the second quarter of 2020 where MVNOs from Comcast, Charter, and Altice reported more net adds than the rest of the industry combined."It is hard to downplay the impressive growth of mobile subscribers that cable operators have seen over the past two years, gaining more than 4 million subscribers in less than three years," says Jason Leigh, research manager, Mobility and 5G at IDC. "And while the competitive pricing and brand familiarity with cable operators create an optimal environment for bringing existing wireline customers into the wireless fold, the question of whether the growth these MVNOs have reported in the past two years is sustainable and poses a significant competitive threat to traditional wireless operators remains unclear."
