This IDC Market Perspective discusses IDC views on the impact of edge offerings and solutions on managed cloud services and the competitive environment. IDC believes that the COVID-19 pandemic is going to tip the balance of enterprise use of IT services in favor of using cloud capabilities that will include the need for edge offerings that can meet critical business objectives for more agile, resilient, and mobile capabilities. While this shift will present new competitive issues, it will also drive a new set of managed cloud services opportunities."IDC expects that COVID-19 will place increasing pressure on managed SPs to meet much more stringent expectations centered on provisioning of services in more real time and for any location, type of person (professionally), business process, and industry and for both enterprise-owned IT environments and cloud capabilities utilized from any and all cloud providers (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS)," says David Tapper, program VP, Outsourcing and Managed Cloud Services at IDC. "Supporting the enterprise need for edge capabilities as part of managed cloud services will require that managed SPs focus on higher-value services in migrating and modernizing client IT to the cloud, supporting a full array of technology options with platform providers, pursuing hybrid solutions with public cloud providers, supporting client need for multicloud management, partnering with OEMs in developing opex-based edge offerings, and developing edge solutions with telecommunications and colocation providers."
