As the manufacturing value chains keep getting more complicated, organizations will look for solutions that can demystify and address the more apparent challenges related to trust. Most manufacturers rely heavily on the data that gets recorded at critical nodes of the value chain, which would be the basis for providing information for compliance, regulatory adherence, and customer satisfaction. A third-party organization can act as a mediator to ensure the accuracy of the data, but with increasing trade volumes, the associated cost and time for data verification has been on the rise. To mitigate these challenges, organizations have been looking at distributed ledger solutions that can increase the data transparency across the value chain.

This IDC Perspective looks at some of the blockchain vendors who have a presence in the supply chain space and a top-level analysis of the various enterprise blockchain platforms in the market. This report would be useful for both CIOs and supply chain line-of-business heads who are looking to invest in blockchain solutions and understand how these platforms align with their business needs."As the complexity and compliance requirements around global trade and supply chains increase, organizations will be looking to create channels for their respective customers to track and trace the products that are being manufactured, right from the raw material sourcing levels. Distributed ledgers and smart contracts are positioned quite well to address these requirements," says Sampath Kumar Venkataswamy, research manager, IDC Asia/Pacific Manufacturing Insights. "As the knowledge and maturity around these technologies increase, industry-specific platforms would also grow, thus providing more off-the-shelf options for the manufacturers," he adds.
