13 Pages

This study presents survey results on Big Data plans and awareness in the Central and Eastern European public sector. Given that Hadoop contains the essential tools for Big Data development and implementation, the survey also assess levels of awareness, enthusiasm, drivers, inhibitors, and expectations related to Hadoop. The results suggest that while the concept and potential of Big Data is gaining purchase in the CEE public sector, many IT professionals are still under-informed on the role of Hadoop in pushing forward Big Data strategies and projects. IDC believes Big Data and Hadoop enthusiasts must work together to lift the level of awareness to open the door to analytics projects and programs that will eventually play major roles in the public sector.

"We are entering the age of the Internet of Things, where devices and monitors and control modules will use real-time data to take action without human involvement. We are also entering the age of cognitive systems, whereby massive volumes of data get crunched through algorithms to automate decision making. Given its wealth of data, the public sector is ideally suited to take the lead in areas such as transportation, environmental monitoring, public health and safety, medical diagnoses, and administration and services in education and government. In addition to mapping out the viability of Big Data projects, IT strategists need to create education programs explaining Hadoop, not just to other IT professionals, but also to elected officials and policy makers in order to make Big Data projects more approachable." - Research Manager Mark Yates, IDC CEMA
