This IDC study provides detailed data and analysis of the EMEA blade and density-optimized (DO) server market in 2013, both in terms of units and revenue. Blade hardware revenue has shown small growth in EMEA in 2013, improving 3% from 2012, although an overall decline of 6% was seen in the blade units shipped compared with 2012 figures. Blade servers were the only platform showing growth besides DO servers, which exhibited 34% YoY revenue growth and displayed a strengthening of the product segment. The decline in blade shipments can be attributed to an increase in the competitive nature of the market, which then can be credited to advances in virtualization and the increasing competition from DO servers. The DO business has reported positive YoY revenue and unit growth figures over the past three years and is expected to show again a 35% YoY revenue increase in the region in 2014.

"In 2013, we observed a general trend that has seen the majority of vendors targeting blade servers at the higher-end market, offsetting the drop in units shipped with higher average selling prices. This has allowed EMEA vendors to generate positive dollar revenue growth despite a decrease in units. Blade servers have also seen an increased traction in integrated systems or datacenters in a box, a market segment that has seen strong double-digit growth in the region over the past year. We expect this to remain constant in 2014 as blades become part of broader integrated solutions," said Eckhardt Fischer, research analyst, IDC EMEA Enterprise Server Group.
