This IDC study provides an analysis of Canadian brand perceptions of network equipment vendors. Brand awareness was measured, along with perceptions of customers, against 11 criteria used for evaluating vendors when purchasing network equipment. This is the first time IDC Canada has conducted the network equipment perceptions study since 2012 (see Brand Perceptions of Networking Vendors in Canada, IDC #CA13CIC12, February 2012), and the buying criteria have been refined to further match what survey respondents felt were the most important factors when buying network equipment. The purpose of the study was to discover:

  • What criteria customers are using to purchase servers
  • How Alcatel-Lucent, Avaya, Cisco, HP, Huawei, and Juniper each measures up against these top buying criteria

Additional brand perception documentation is available for enterprise storage and x86 server vendors.

Additional brand perception segmentation is available for network equipment vendors upon request.

"In this year's study, we saw a greater emphasis on performance over pricing for network equipment purchases. The continued adoption of unified communications, mobility, and BYOD continues to stress network infrastructure and fuel the adoption of newer technologies such as 10Gb switching and wireless ac. Workload performance, ranked fifth in terms of buying criteria for 2012, moved up to second place, while low total cost of ownership/support costs and low purchase price, ranked in the top 5 in 2012, dropped to the eighth and ninth place, respectively, this year. IDC expects this trend to continue as software-defined networking adoption will begin to commoditize switching and routing boxes, leading to even lower pricing points and a greater emphasis on performance and reliability." - Kevin Lonergan, analyst, Infrastructure Solutions
