This IDC study forecasts demand for video game and interactive entertainment console hardware and disc-based game software worldwide through 2018 by major product family. North America is broken out from Western Europe, Asia/Pacific (including Japan), and a combined rest of the world (ROW) region. The aim of the study is to describe which product family is most likely to gain market share through 2018, and why this should be so, and characterize the health of the console gaming ecosystem later this decade.

"Sony's PlayStation 4 appears particularly well positioned for growth in the next few years," says Lewis Ward, IDC's director of Gaming research. "The transition away from disc-based distribution, moreover, is inexorable, but it's clear that game disc revenue will represent a majority of console game software and direct service revenue through 2018."
