This IDC study presents the worldwide 2014-2018 forecast for the storage and virtualized x86 environments market. Key factors driving the growth and evolution of storage in virtual environments include flash, software-defined storage, and the rise of storage architectures that leverage internal DAS instead of shared storage.

"Virtual environments are not only becoming increasingly mature as platforms to host legacy applications, but they are also supporting a variety of high-performance, very agile, and high-growth 3rd computing platform applications," said Eric Burgener, research director, Storage Systems at IDC. "This is driving a new set of storage requirements that are heavily leveraging flash, software-defined storage, and scale-out architectures that use internal DAS as enterprise storage."
