1.1 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This report covers the market for extruded polystyrene (XPS) thermal insulation products in Europe and is drawn from IAL Consultants' study set on The European Market for Thermal Insulation Products. It updates IAL Consultants' last edition of the aforementioned study which was last published in 2011. IAL Consultants has many years of expertise researching the thermal insulation markets of Europe and, more recently, China and Brazil. This is the ninth edition of this study.

This volume covers the following country/region markets: Austria, Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), Benelux (Belgium and the Netherlands), Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. For the purpose of this study:

  • Nordics"refers to Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden
  • Other Western Europe"refers to Austria, Benelux, Portugal and Switzerland
  • Other Eastern Europe"refers to the Baltic States, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

1.2 METHODOLOGY

The study is based on desk research and an extensive series of interviews. The desk research covered the relevant technical and trade journals, published official statistics, figures derived by trade associations and the data bank of IAL Consultants. This data bank has been built up over the last twenty years from a series of studies covering products in the building, construction and process plant industries including paints, plastics, adhesives, sealants, polyurethanes and flame retardants. The interview programme included high-level respondents in companies manufacturing, distributing and installing thermal insulation materials.

1.3 PRODUCTS COVERED

Factors affecting the type and amount of thermal insulation required include:

  • Climate
  • Durability
  • Ease of installation and replacement at end of life
  • Cost effectiveness
  • Toxicity
  • Flammability
  • Environmental impact and sustainability

Although a short description of the insulation material/s discussed within this volume is given below, it should be noted that a combination of materials is often used.

1.3.1 Extruded Polystyrene (XPS)

For extrusion, polystyrene with a high viscosity is most suitable, i.e. products with a melt volume index (MVI) of 200/5 in the lower end of the range between 1 and 7 ml/10min.

The physical properties of XPS mean that it can be used in board form in roofing, flooring and walling applications. The low moisture absorption of the material makes it ideal for use in cold storage facilities and refrigerated transport, where it is subjected to freeze thaw cycles. The high compressive strength of the material also makes it ideal for load bearing applications. XPS does not rot and has relatively high thermal insulation properties.

Due to its cost, XPS tends to be used in specialist areas where its particular properties are specifically required.

1.4 END-USE SECTORS

The considerable overlap between the various end-use markets makes it difficult to allocate exact volumes of insulation products to precise applications. For example, considerable amounts of insulation are incorporated into laminated board and sheet which is sold as such, and the manufacturer or merchant may not know how his customer makes use of it. A sheet could be used to make a cold store, in which case it should be included in the building sector, or alternatively to make a refrigerated van, which is classified as transport. In addition, many insulation contractors do not divide their market by end-use sector, so even the manufacturers of insulation materials cannot give an exact sales pattern for their products. We have divided the end-use sectors into building and industrial.

1.4.1 Building

This sector includes commercial and domestic building, cold storage and agricultural storage. The building sector generally takes up to 90% of volume (m3) of the insulation market. Thermal insulation for domestic pipe work and air conditioning applications are not included in the building market figures. It was found that some respondents could not separate heating and ventilation figures for domestic and commercial building from the usage in industrial buildings and process plant. There is therefore some overlap in the definitions used by the trade. IAL Consultants' approach of combining both sectors into a unique pipe lagging market figure eliminates double counting.

1.4.2 Industrial

This sector consists of the following:

Pipe lagging

This includes the thermal lagging of industrial pipe work, ducts and plant. Where domestic pipe work has been identified this is also included, as well as insulation of district heating pipes.

Process Plant and Machinery

This section includes all applications in process plant (except the lagging of pipe work and ducts) and in ancillary equipment. A special feature of this end-use sector is the requirement for very high temperature insulation in furnaces, ovens, etc.

Domestic and Commercial Appliances

This sector covers refrigerators, freezers, cookers and storage and other heaters. Market figures exempt other minor uses, such as irons and commercial presses.

Transport

Road, rail, and sea transport is considered. Applications include the production of refrigerated vehicles and boatbuilding.

1.5 PRICES

Pricing data collected during the research differed significantly possibly due to the amount of product qualities on offer in the market.

The following prices were used to calculate overall market values. These prices aim to reflect typical prices from suppliers. Readers are invited to use different pricing information, should they so wish.

1.6 UNITS OF VOLUME

Volume estimates are given in the form of both cubic metres (m3) and tonnes. Many of those working in the industry prefer to work in cubic metres and all estimates are therefore given in both cubic metres and tonnes. Conversion of cubic metres to tonnes and vice versa is dependent on the density of the material and this can vary with insulants according to the end use for which the product is intended. Opinions on average densities of products varied, but the estimates below were felt to be representative of the market. For some products however, notably mineral fibres, densities varied enormously between end uses and also between the two materials herein comprised: glass wool and rock wool. Therefore some allowance has been made for different applications.

The following density data has been used in volume conversions (cubic metres to tonnes, or vice versa). Volumes have been rounded where applicable. Readers are invited to use alternative densities, should they so wish.

1.7 FORECASTS

The growth figures to 2017 have been derived from responses given by industry experts that have been contacted for interviews and from building and construction industry forecasts published by Euroconstruct, a consortium of European construction research and forecasting organisations.

Growth rates are presented in a compounded format, representing the average growth rates of the market per year if the forecast period is taken as a whole and the market was to grow at a steady rate. Market values forecasts for the year 2017 are based on 2012 prices.

There are a substantial number of factors that have a significant impact on the European insulation market. These include:

  • The increasingly unpredictable nature of the seasonal weather. Harsh winter periods could further stimulate the loft and domestic pipe insulation markets
  • The increasing cost of fuel is currently a major driver; the increase in oil prices is related to political unrest in North Africa and the Middle East and a growing demand from the emerging markets
  • Tax deductions to owner occupiers and tenants
  • The availability of low interest rates, which have the potential to promote construction output
  • Building regulations are continually evolving with the paramount objective to improve the insulation of buildings and consequently save energy. This provides a national stimulation for insulation materials to be used in the renovation sector and for better insulation to be used in the new build sector
  • The new directives targeting CO2 emissions rate reduction by 20% for new buildings as part of Europe 2020 Strategy.
