Almost 70 percent of service providers in this month's Thought Leadership Council (TLC) survey say they either already have or will move compute and application execution to the edge by 2020. For those communications service providers (CSPs) that already are using edge computing in their networks, a third say they've done so for enterprise transformation.
One third of CSPs in the report also plan to implement edge computing for 5G by 2019, with more than half of panelists indicating that the ability to provide low-latency services is the greatest technical driver for moving 5G to the edge.
The TLC is a unique Heavy Reading initiative founded in August 2017, in which a panel of highly targeted CSPs participate in strategic research. TLC members receive private invitations to take part in anonymous surveys, which enables them to provide insights that might otherwise go undisclosed.
The focus group covered in Thought Leadership Council: CSPs Not Hesitating to Move Network Functions to Edge was asked nine questions about deployment plans, drivers and challenges for implementing edge solutions. The results clearly indicate that service providers already are moving or have plans to move significant portions of their networks to the edge with the expectation that they will reap significant benefits, including the creation of new vertical business opportunities, while shortening provisioning and gaining agility in their networks.
TLC members were asked when their companies will move compute and application execution to the edge. Results are shown in the following excerpt. The majority of panelists were evenly split at 33 percent each between those who are committed to moving such functions to the edge and those that will do so by 2020. Another 21 percent of panelists will do so by 2019, and 13 percent already have done so.
