目次

Pretty soon - if it hasn't happened already - the proportion of Internet traffic accounted for by content delivery networks (CDNs) will exceed the 50 percent mark, meaning more than half of all Internet content will involve a CDN. CDNs can be viewed as an overarching compensatory mechanism to support the Internet in the face of extraordinary and ever-growing demands placed on it. Market interest in the CDN space intensifies with broad recognition of the CDN model as the most efficient way to deliver digital content.

Just as video is the dominant force in CDN growth, Akamai Technologies continues to be the sector's 800-pound gorilla. The CDN pioneer accounts for more than half of all revenue in this sector, and there's little indication that its position will weaken in the foreseeable future. That said, there's ample opportunity for other CDN providers to establish solid businesses, given not only anticipated demand growth rates but also a broadening of potential customers to include small- and mid-sized enterprises.

The CDN model continues to evolve to keep up with market changes. While "static" or stable content-like videos are cached in the longstanding CDN manner, increasingly "dynamic" (continually changing) websites require more complex techniques that draw on similarly CDN-based expertise and platforms. Basic caching has become highly commoditized while value-added services (VAS) - including Web acceleration and front-end optimization, as well as security offerings and tools that adapt content to proliferating mobile devices - are becoming an ever-larger portion of this market and its primary source of profit.

‘CDN Competitors Go Small to Take on Akamai’ examines the current state of the CDN market. It reviews the continuing evolution of the CDN model and estimates market shares of major CDN providers. The report also examines emerging market trends and issues, including the development of VAS, such as security services. Finally, the report profiles 11 market players with significant impact on this segment.

Companies that champion their CDN capabilities are typically looking on an ongoing basis for ways to expand their impact on customer businesses with networks' abilities to overcome ongoing concerns about the Internet's security, reliability and "best effort" nature. CDNs continue expanding rapidly into new sectors while also moving deeper into well-established media and entertainment sectors. Application acceleration is also becoming ever more important.
