The market for point of care molecular diagnostics is gaining traction and will witness substantial expansion over the next few years. Isothermal amplification technology is extensively used for diagnosis of a wide range of diseases. Increasing research and development to explore its application scope in new areas such as COVID-19 detection will boost its adoption significantly.

In November 2020, Lucira Health's new COVID-19 All-In-One test received emergency use authorization from the U.S. FDA for at-home use. The test can detect SARS-CoV-2 in about half an hour and will be available in the market on a prescription only basis some time in 2021.

The test is based on loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). PCR tests which are currently widely used for COVID-19 detection require temperature oscillations to work. LAMP, on the other hand, amplifies the target RNA sequences using an enzyme that can work at a constant temperature of 65 °C. This makes LAMP based tests cheaper and faster than PCR tests.

In terms of the applications, the market is segmented into infectious diseases, hematology, oncology, and others. Point of care molecular diagnostics market share from infectious diseases segment was estimated to be worth USD 2 billion in 2020 and it will grow substantially through 2027.

The infectious diseases segment includes flu, tuberculosis (TB), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and others. Increasing awareness regarding the early diagnosis of these diseases and the rapid surge in COVID-19 cases worldwide is driving the segment growth.
