Abstract

What does the future hold for the smart grid-s AMI market? Given flattening smart meter shipments across mature markets globally, AMI vendors are now seeking new revenue streams, and the data analytics space is emerging as an attractive opportunity with its scalable, recurring revenue-based model. According to GTM Research, aggregate expenditure on AMI analytics is expected to total $9.7 billion by 2020. As the market develops, opportunities will increase for vendors that are able to offer turnkey analytics solutions without the need for customized integration. Even now, consolidation has begun as many companies with origins as pure-play software providers are absorbed by larger conglomerates, as with the 2012 acquisitions of Ecologic Analytics and DataRaker by Landis + Gyr and Oracle, respectively.

Federal Stimulus funding in the United States, government mandates in Japan, parts of Australia, Canada and Europe and the rapid industrialization occurring in China have all led to accelerated AMI deployments - often without IT infrastructure in place to fully leverage the benefits of the data provided. As this example from the U.S. illustrates, AMI functionality is typically enabled via a hierarchy of incremental integrations with back-office systems, typically beginning with the software systems that are most central to the meter-to-cash process.

From a technical perspective, integrating AMI data with legacy systems such as customer information systems and outage management system remains the most pervasive challenge for utilities. Despite the proliferation of numerous standards including IEC 61968 Common Information Model (CIM) and MultiSpeak designed to facilitate the rapid integration of back-end systems, standards do not ensure interoperability. However, despite some early shortcomings, it is important to recognize the role that standards will play in helping to migrate the back-office from an environment of one-to-one integrations to one-to-many integrations.
