Smart City initiatives are developing in Europe as its growing urban population and economy are consolidating the positioning of several European cities as premium service, trade, and competition hubs. The forecasted increase in urban population will further support the development of smart city solutions.
The importance and urgency of issues plaguing citizen services significantly vary from one city to another in the European region. Countries in Western Europe are more sensitive to efficient resources management and addressing environmental issues; a vast number of projects are aimed at achieving a greener and pollution-free future. In Central and Eastern Europe, smart city projects are more focused at closing infrastructure gaps and unlocking the innovative potential of technologies to spur economic growth.
Smart city projects revolve around four priority areas in Europe: sustainable urban mobility, sustainable district and built environment, integrated infrastructure and processes, and enhanced public services. And standardized smart city frameworks and market environments in Europe have enabled the launch of pan-European smart city projects.
