Description/Summary

IP Overview presents a patent mapping analysis of the "Redox flow batteries" field.

Redox flow batteries has been investigated for a long time and has raised several successive strong periods of interest since the 1960s.

The main advantage of this technology is that the energy capacity of the storage system and power rating are decoupled making these batteries able to fit the need of large energy storage systems (ESS)

Despite large investments and development, most of these technologies failed in the past to massively enter the market of ESS because of their competition with more mature energy storage technologies notably mechanical ones (hydroelectric, flywheels and compressed air).

In recent years, new redox couples investigations and recent developments are meeting the growing need of large energy storage notably to integrate renewable resources and manage load leveling.

The present report analyses the patent environment and notably highlights the strategy of current major players. No time limitation were applied in order to have a global overview of past developments and royalty free technologies. These major patent holders are end-users (Kansai Electric Power, Kashima-kita Electric Power ), battery manufacturers (Sumitomo Electric Ind, Meidensha Electric MFG ...) and institutional players (CAS, Univ Tsinghua, AIST ...).
