Description/Summary

In the current roadmap on emerging battery technologies, LiMPO4 cathodes raises high hope concerning the possibility of efficient energy storage at high charge and discharge rate, thus raising the technical potential of hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles as well as wind and solar energy storage. Moreover, because of the safety issues raised by Li-ion batteries, LiMPO4 cathodes are of crucial interest for battery manufacturers.

In the 2011 report we noticed key acquisitions to complete technology portfolio (Phostech by Sud Chemie, Sud Chemie by Clariant, High Power Lithium by Dow Chemical and CIBA by BASF ), 2012 is the year of finalisation of licensing deals and the setting up of JV for a high scale manufacturing phase. The importance in number of LiMPO4 manufacturing patents confirms the current increase of production phase and also the increasing difficulties to protect innovative LiMPO4 chemistry in the field.
