US filter demand to reach $9.7 billion in 2020

In 2015, US demand for air and fluid filters totaled $9.7 billion. Air and fluid filters -- which include hydraulic and pneumatic fluid power, water, and air purification filters but exclude internal combustion engine-related filters -- are installed in a wide range of original equipment products, although replacement (or aftermarket) demand accounts for the vast majority of sales. Through 2020, sales of air and fluid filters will expand 3.8 percent per annum, rising to $9.7 billion. Advances will be fueled by a positive economic outlook, including continued strength in manufacturing activity and construction expenditures, as well as by increasing consumer preoccupation with domestic indoor air quality and tap water purity.

Air filters to benefit from heightened attention to emissions controls

Air filters will benefit from accelerating shipments of air pollution control equipment, growth in manufacturing output, and increasingly stringent regulations regarding emissions and air quality. Among product types, demand for air washer and cartridge air filters will expand most rapidly through 2020. Advances in sales of air washer filters will be promoted by environmental regulations requiring the reduction of sulfur dioxide and mercury emissions and by the anticipated acceleration in electric power utility construction spending over the forecast period, as newer electric facilities are required to use higher-value, state-of-the-art filters in order to comply with EPA standards. Continued growth in demand for consumer air cleaners that incorporate cartridge HEPA filters will boost value gains for cartridge air filters, as will the development of market-specific, customizable filtration systems.

Growth in top 3 markets to be at similar pace

The three largest markets - public utilities, consumer, and industrial and manufacturing - have presented similar market trends in the past. That pattern is expected to continue through 2020, with annual growth in the utilities market approximating that in the consumer and industrial and manufacturing markets. Sales of air and fluid filters to the utilities market will be supported by accelerating shipments of pollution control equipment and greater municipal water use. Continued strength in manufacturers' shipments will lead to increased filter sales to industrial markets. Sales growth in both the utilities and industrial markets will also be fueled by stricter air and water regulations, including standards governing the disposal of effluent from hydraulic fracturing activity. Consumers are increasingly concerned with improving residential indoor air quality, and preoccupation with the quality of municipal water supplies continues to grow. In particular, the latter is driving demand for higher-value filters capable of removing heavy metals and biological contaminants. Advances in residential construction expenditures will spur sales of whole-house air cleaning systems and point-of-entry water filtration systems, while the large existing base of both such systems will support aftermarket demand. Nevertheless, increasing market maturity and the tendency among consumers to replace certain filters less often than is recommended will limit sales to some extent.

Study coverage

Details on these and other key findings are contained in Air & Fluid Filters, Freedonia study. It presents historical demand data (2005, 2010, 2015) plus forecasts (2020, 2025) by filter medium, product and market. The study also considers market environment factors, evaluates company market share and profiles 32 US industry players such as CLARCOR International, Parker-Hannifin and Donaldson.
