US demand to rise 2.4% annually through 2019

Demand for produce packaging in the US is forecast to rise 2.4 percent per year to $5.7 billion in 2019, driven by gains for fresh-cut produce as well as sustained demand for healthy snacks, both of which require high-value packaging to extend the shelf life of contents. Additionally, the preference for packaging that makes produce preparation more convenient, such as microwaveable film, or that cuts back on food waste by providing only enough produce to prepare a single meal will contribute to a higher percentage of produce sold packaged and boost demand for a greater variety in package offerings. Demographic factors such as the aging population and growth in Hispanic and Asian American nationalities will aid demand for fresh produce overall while the large millennial population will drive demand for packaged produce.

Convenient, marketable, sustainable packages to drive growth

Among packaging materials, the fastest growth will be observed in those that provide convenience and portability as well as those with the ability to showcase the freshness of the produce and provide product differentiation through high-quality graphics. Plastic containers, which include clamshells, cups, and other rigid packages, will register rapid gains through 2019 as they easily ship and present a clean image in retail settings. Plastic bags, primarily stand-up pouch types, will also see healthy growth as technological advances allow this package format to replace options with less shelf appeal, such as flat bags or bulk displays, as well as those with a less environmentally friendly profile, such as rigid plastic containers that usually require more material.

The increased marketing of specific produce varieties to appeal to customers looking for new healthy snack options has led to higher levels of packaging overall, specifically with products targeted toward children. Demand for produce with both a high level of nutri-tion and a sustainable profile will lead to continued gains for locally sourced and organic produce with package differentiation utilized to advertise the healthful properties as well as demonstrate commitment to ethical farming and distribution practices. In particular, niche produce types, such as pomegranates and

specialty greens, offer opportunities for growth as these products tend to rely more heavily on packaging as a way to educate consumers on nutritional properties.

Berries continue to hold leading market share

Berry packaging will lead the produce packaging market through 2019, with production gains, increases in single-serve offerings of various berry types, and sustained demand for clamshell containers and other high-value packages driving growth for this application. Berries will continue to benefit from their ability to serve as a healthy snack that can appeal to children as well as a versa-tile ingredient in desserts, salads, and drinks. Other produce types that comprise a large part of the produce packaging market include apples, potatoes, and tomatoes, all of which have seen increased packaging in recent years as special varieties and fresh-cut offerings become more prevalent.

Details on these and other findings are contained in Produce Packaging, a Freedonia industry study which presents historical data (2004, 2009, and 2014) plus forecasts for 2019 and 2024 by major market and by container material type.
