Overall tobacco continued to see current value sales decline in 2014 over the previous year, despite an increase in VAT. This was chiefly due to continued retail volume decline for cigarettes, the dominant product area. Despite anti-smoking legislation being relatively relaxed in Japan, with no nationwide public smoking ban and marketing being permitted to a limited extent, an ageing population and a strong health and wellness trend is resulting in many consumers quitting smoking.
