Abstract

The solar PV value chain is rapidly diversifying as manufacturers and component suppliers strategically position to capture the 100 GW of PV forecasted by 2020. Key to the shift is an expanding geographic footprint, increasing manufacturing capacity, and the launching of next - generation technologies. These changes have sparked a PV technology renaissance underpinned by significant cost improvements after years of dormancy.

A combination of pure - play solar module manufacturers, global technology companies, and industrial conglomerates are reshaping the immature industry' s competitive landscape. At the same time, strengthening Chinese suppliers are leveraging their cost advantages, forcing entrenched Western suppliers to reevaluate their strategies that include product differentiation, shifting manufacturing bases to low cost regions, and outsourcing module assembly.

A new, comprehensive study from IHS Emerging Energy Research, Global Solar PV Supply Chain Strategies: 2010 - 2025, is your source for PV market analysis, evaluating the players, pricing, technology and trends impacting this growing industry. This landmark PV study covers the following trends and more:

- Asian suppliers squeeze traditional suppliers. Chinese companies led by SunTech, Yingli Solar, Trina Solar, SolarFun Power, and Canadian Solar are gaining market share with low - cost crystalline silicon modules. Furthermore, several of these players are following a vertical integration trend to further improve their competitive position in a still fragmented market.

- Supply chain cost declines continue. Capacity additions along the supply chain, including silicon, wafers, cells, and inverters, have buttressed the previously tight supply chain. The impact has been greatest for crystalline silicon suppliers that have seen silicon prices fall from US$400/kg in 2008 to US$55/kg in 2010 after capacity expansions.

- Next generation technologies seek larger share of the market. First Solar' s success has bolstered the hopes of next generation technology promoters. While undemonstrated at scale, a select group of emerging CdTe, CIGS, and a - Si manufacturers are at the edge of larger - scale deployment to challenge First Solar and entrenched crystalline silicon technology module suppliers.
