Abstract

With few utility - scale wind projects prior to 2009, Latin America has now emerged onto the global stage attracting players from Europe and regional developers as well as state and local utilities. Latin America as a region installed 750 MW of wind power through 2009, but a recent surge in projects and mounting pipelines suggest wind will play a greater role going forward, reaching 5.7% penetration on 46 GW installed by 2025. Markets are maturing at different paces: Brazil, Mexico, and Chile are the regional leaders - - the three are expected to add over 3.7 GW from 2010 through 2012 - - followed by Peru, Uruguay, Argentina, and Costa Rica.

EER' s new study, Latin America Wind Energy Markets and Strategies: 2010 - 2025, provides strategic market intelligence on Latin American wind energy markets, analyzing market environments, development competition, and turbine supply for each. The following are just a few of the key trends addressed in this new market study:

  • - Brazil leads Latin America wind through 2025: Brazil currently comprises nearly 70% of the Latin America wind market, yet has still tapped just 606 MW of the Brazil' s 100 GW of wind potential. Improving government incentives from tenders to financing conditions are encouraging local developers such as Dobreve Energia, Renova Energia, and CPFL to lead the market. At the same time, international developers (Enel Green Power, EDP Renovaveis, Acciona Energia and Gamesa Energia) are leveraging their experience for longer - term build - out. Brazil' s size and location positions the country as a turbine supply hub that will sustain its regional wind power dominance.
  • - Chile and Mexico offer additional scaling opportunities: Chile' s implementation of a Renewable Energy Law and Mexico' s ongoing project tendering through state utility CFE will deliver demand totaling nearly 600 MW annually combined by 2015, stabilizing at 500 MW combined through 2025. Relatively lower country risk, the need to diversify generation sources, and increasingly proactive governments position these countries as the region' s other key entry opportunities.
  • - Latin America draws international OEMs in global competition: Brazil' s December 2009 capacity tender drew major interest and orders from global OEMs including Alstom, GE, Enercon, and Suzlon targeting the country for their Latin America entry strategy as turbine vendors line up for orders. A steady flow of firm turbine supply agreements (TSAs) are expected to support the local supply chain build - out required in Brazil. In addition, OEM competition will intensify in Mexico as Mexico' s near - term pipeline expands
