Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is produced endogenously when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. It is naturally present in very few foods. It is also taken as a dietary supplement. Vitamin D is beneficial for promoting calcium absorption in the gut. It maintains the adequate amount of the serum calcium and phosphate concentrations for normal mineralization of bone and preventing the hypocalcemic tetany.
