Market Overview

The global starch coating market reached US$ XX million in 2021 and is expected to reach US$ XX million by 2029, growing at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period 2022-2029.

The starch coating is a colorless edible coating (EC) that increases the shelf life of vegetables, fruits and other products. Fruits and vegetables are crucial in the human diet because of their health and nutritional benefits. However, they have a relatively short post-harvest life and are susceptible to physiological and biochemical alterations, which can have physical or pathological origins, resulting in significant economic losses.

The coating exhibits high oxygen barrier capacity with several additional benefits: ready availability, low cost and good fibrogenic capacity. Other components, such as emulsifiers and plasticizers, may be added to the polymer matrix to enhance the polymer matrix's extensibility, flexibility and stability.

Starch is a viable polysaccharide for food coating, considering its availability, fibrogenic potential and low cost. It is one of the most natural polysaccharides utilized as a food coating. Further, potato, corn, sweet potato and cassava are the four main raw materials used in the starch coating.

Market Dynamics

Consumer demand for additive-free and minimally processed foods is expected to drive the market. In addition, stringent regulations over plastic packaging and food wastage are expected to support the market growth. However, the hydrophilic nature of the starch coating is expected to restrain the market.

Consumer demand for additive-free and minimally processed foods are expected to drive the market

For many years, post-harvest treatments with synthetic waxes or chemical fungicides have been employed to control post-harvest rot and improve the shelf life of fruits. However, continued use of these chemicals has resulted in health and environmental problems such as chemical residues and the spread of resistant disease strains.

The increasing regulations on the use of agrochemicals set by many countries and the significant consumer demand for minimally processed and high-quality fresh food products have intensified the pursuit of new preservation technologies and methods. The use of a starch coating to increase the shelf life of food items and protect them from harmful environmental effects has emerged as a viable and environmentally beneficial option.

The starch coating produces a semi-permeable barrier to water vapor and gas, minimizing respiration and weight loss while keeping the freshness of the fruit and giving the coated products a glossy finish. Furthermore, the coating can act as a carrier for various functional ingredients, such as antioxidants, antimicrobials, nutrients, coloring and flavoring compounds, improving quality, food stability and safety and thus extending the coating's functional performance.

The hydrophilic nature of the starch coating is expected to restrain the market

The hydrophilic nature of starch coating leads to high water sensitivity and exhibits low water vapor barrier capacity. Different chemicals such as surfactants, plasticizers, lipids or other polymers can be added to improve the functional qualities of the starch-based coating. However, the chemical addition increases the manufacturing costs.

Furthermore, polysaccharides, such as cellulose, alginates, pectin, chitosan and others, are naturally occurring polymers commonly utilized for edible polymer coating and are compatible with a wide range of functional chemicals.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis

COVID-19 outbreak has compelled chemical companies to face supply & demand challenges. For instance, the Chemical Activity Barometer (CAB) of the American Chemistry Council declined 7.3% year over year. The CAB is a leading indicator for the whole chemical economy as it includes chemical production, chemical business shares, chemical pricing data and other factors. The organic chemicals industry suffered a huge setback due to halted production and a limited supply of raw materials.

However, logistics barriers disrupted food supply chains during the pandemic, weakening high-value goods due to their short shelf life. In addition, consumers have focused on the products with long shelf life, such as dried or canned foods, milk or milk substitutes and frozen foods due to convenience and increased cooking at home. As a result, the edible coatings can increase the shelf life of food items, anticipated to support the starch coating market over the forecast period.

Segment Analysis

The global starch coating market is segmented into corn, sweet potato, potato, cassava, and others based on raw material.

Corn accounts for approximately 65% of all starch produced worldwide, followed by sweet potato at 13% and cassava at 11%. Corn starch reinforced with glycerol and nutmeg oil nanoemulsion is popular among food manufacturers because it improves the edible coating's functional and mechanical properties. In U.S., corn refiners buy and process between 10% and 15% of the corn produced each year. The producers break down corn kernels into their constituent elements to create hundreds of goods that impact people's lives daily.

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) produced a stabilizer by combining corn starch and vegetable oil at the 2019 BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and AgTech in Des Moines, Iowa. The stabilizer can benefit from the salad dressings, ice cream, sauces and other meals and beverages.

The stabilizer blends high-amylose starch with salts obtained from vegetable oil fatty acids, rather than petroleum oil, to create starch-based coatings that could lead to new environmentally friendly goods.

Geographical Analysis

Based on geography, the global starch coating market is segmented into North America, Europe, South America, Asia-Pacific and Middle East & Africa.

Europe is anticipated to have a considerable share of the global starch coating market, owing to the region's efforts to combat food waste and strict regulations on plastic packaging. According to industry estimates, food waste in Europe has reached 88 million tons per year, costing US$ 150 million. Every year, around 250 million meals are thrown away in UK. Furthermore, every eighth grocery item is thrown away in German households, resulting in 6.7 million tons of food in trash cans.

Furthermore, the region is dealing with major plastic packaging challenges. Therefore, the regulatory and government organizations are enacting strict plastic packaging rules. The announcement by the French government that fruit and vegetables will no longer be sold in plastic packaging has sparked debate over the relationship between food waste and packaging.

Besides, Europe has a large supply of starch used as a raw material. The European starch industry's 28 member companies transform 24 million tons of EU agricultural raw materials into 11 million tons of starch-based components in 20 of the EU's 28 member states.

Global Starch Coating Market Competitive Landscape

The global starch coating market is moderately competitive and fragmented with increasingly stringent regulations over plastic packaging and food waste, resulting in investment by companies, contributing to the market growth. In addition, major companies are Tate & Lyle, Cargill Inc., Flo Chemical Corporation, Ingredion Inc., Archer Daniels Midland Company, BENEO GmbH, Kerry Group, Avebe, Roquette Freres, Millennium Starch India Pvt. Ltd. and others. Further, the companies are adopting growth strategies such as expansions, acquisitions, product launches and collaborations, contributing to the market growth globally.

Tate & Lyle

Overview: Tate & Lyle is a UK-based company specializing in manufacturing and supplying ingredients for food, beverage and industrial markets. It is headquartered in London, UK. Further, the company converted raw materials such as tapioca and corn into ingredients that add texture, taste and nutrients to food & beverages.

Product Portfolio: Tate & Lyle offers BATTER-UP® Starch, a coating system for adhesion. The line of starches is made from maize.

Key Development: In December 2021, Tate & Lyle signed the Food and Drink Federation's (FDF) Action on Fibre in UK. The FDF's Action on Fibre campaign plans to help customers 'bridge the gap' between their dietary recommendations and fiber consumption to enhance gut health and lower the risk of heart disease and some types of cancer.
