If the lesion cannot be seen on ultrasound, the wire can be inserted using a stereotactic or off-hand technique. Following excision, the specimen is X-rayed to ensure that the lesion has been removed. There is little discomfort associated with this procedure, aside from a small puncture in the skin caused by the needle.
