The International Forum on Food Safety and Trade held in Geneva in 2019 and the International Conference on Food Safety held in Addis Ababa in February 2019 iterated the importance of food safety in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Increasing demand for processed and convenience foods is driving the food-grade lubricants

The growing affluence and rise in disposable income, especially in countries such as China and India, have led to increased demand for convenience and processed foods. Developed economies have grown significantly in the last few years in terms of food manufacturing. For instance, the US and Germany are advanced in food processing technology.

According to a joint study by Grant Thornton, the UK and the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), India, India's food processing sector has the potential to attract $33 billion in investments by 2024 and has a scope for significant investments in food processing technologies and processing equipment. The demand, in turn, has spurred global companies to set up large and mechanized operations. H1 lubricants are used on food-processing equipment as a protective antirust film, release agent on gaskets or seals of tank closures, and as a lubricant for machine parts and equipment in locations where the lubricated part is potentially exposed to food.

Quality concern of food grade lubricants over its standard industrial counterpart is restraining the market

It is believed that food-grade lubricants provide a shorter lubrication interval or a much shorter service life. In addition, the lubricants are not resistant to higher or lower temperatures and are not compatible with plastics and elastomers and thus not meeting the standard industrial lubricants.

However, nowadays, approved food-grade lubricants base oils and additives have been developed to be as good as their conventional industrial counterparts. For instance, Kluber Lubrication, a German company, developed a new NSF H1 lubricant designed for food and beverage facilities. These are capable of performing the same as that a conventional industrial lubricant does. The lubricants are suitable for even higher temperatures or loads and in wash-down environments.

Food Grade Lubricants Market Segment Analysis

The United States Department of Agriculture (US$A) created the original food-grade designations H1, H2 and H3.

H1 lubricants, referred to as "above the line" lubricants, are used on food-processing equipment as a protective antirust film, as a release agent on gaskets or seals of tank closures lubricant for equipment in locations where the lubricated part is potentially exposed to food. Ingredients for use in H1 lubricants are designated HX-1.

Moreover, H2 lubricants are used as a lubricant, release agent or antirust film on equipment and machine parts in locations where there is no possibility of the lubricant contacting edible products. And H3 soluble oils apply to hooks, trolleys and similar equipment to clean and prevent rust.
