Power

In 2012-2013 the West European data center markets experienced positive growth in terms of their total power requirements. Regional power demand was up by over 4% compared with the previous 12-month period. Although power demand fell in the Italian and Spanish data center markets, demand grew in all of the other countries surveyed in this report. The strongest demand growth occurred in the Nordic countries, Switzerland and the UK. The Western Europe Data Center Trends report provides insight into which industries have the highest power requirements for their data centers. It also provides detailed information on monitoring activity related to power usage, energy efficiency and carbon emissions.

Outsourcing

By mid-2013 the outsourced share of the West European data center footprint had increased to 23%. This was up from 19% in the previous year. In 2013, 27% of the Netherlands' data center footprint while just over 24% of Spain's was outsourced. Only in Switzerland, Portugal and Germany is the outsourced share of the total footprint lower than 20%. Operators in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg report the highest rate of growth in data center outsourcing. The Western Europe Data Center Trends report provides insight into the type of enterprises that are driving the shift towards outsourced business models. It also examines trends in the use of specific outsourcing service models.

Investment

Over the past 12 months the West European data center markets have continued to experience positive investment growth. This is despite a challenging economic environment. Total regional investment in the sector was up by 7.5% in 2012-2013, with Germany and the Nordic countries showing the highest levels of investment. Going into 2014 investment growth is expected to accelerate in line with improved regional economics. The Western Europe Data Center Trends report examines both the drivers and avenues of current investment trends, as well as the strategies and technologies that will shape investment patterns over the next 12 months.
