Power

In 2012-2013 the North American data center markets experienced positive growth in terms of their total power requirements. Regional power demand was up by almost 7% compared with the previous 12-month period. Although the United States accounts for approximately 92% of the region's power demand, Canada experienced a higher annual rate of growth - approximately 8.8% compared with 6.7% in the United States. The North American Data Center Trends report provides insight into which industries have the highest power requirements for their data centers. It also provides detailed information on monitoring activity related to power usage, energy efficiency and carbon emissions.

Outsourcing

By mid-2013 the outsourced share of the North America data center footprint had increased to 24.5%. This was up from 19% in the previous year. In 2013, 24.8% of the United States data center footprint was outsourced while the proportion in Canada is 23.4%. Across the region almost all types of enterprise experienced outsourcing growth, with public administration, IT services and the financial sector using outsourcing the most. The North American Data Center Trends report provides insight into the type of enterprises that are driving the shift towards outsourced business models. It also examines trends in the use of specific outsourcing service models.

Investment

Over the past 12 months the North American data center markets have continued to experience positive investment growth. The total amount invested in facility equipment & solutions and IT optimization strategies & solutions rose from US$27.9 billion in 2011-12 to US$33.7 billion in 2012- 13 (reflecting an increase of 20.3%). Total facilities and IT investment is predicted to grow by another 7.4% in 2013-14 to US$36.2 billion. The North American Data Center Trends report examines both the drivers and avenues of current investment trends, as well as the strategies and technologies that will shape investment patterns over the next 12 months. The report also provides insight into which industry sectors are likely to grow fastest in terms of data center space and investment levels.
