The7th edition of CSIL Report ‘The European market for bathroom furniture, furnishings and wellness’ offers an accurate comprehensive picture of the bathroom furniture and furnishings industry in Europe, providing data and trends (both in value and in volume) in bathroom furniture and furnishings consumption, at European level as a whole and for each country considered, for the total sector and by product.

Main macroeconomic variables necessary to analyze the performance of the sector for the last 6 years and forecasts 2016-2017, analysis of the competitive system, financial analysis on a sample of over 60 selected European companies which have bathroom furniture as main business area, overview of the distribution system and estimates of average factory prices for each product considered, are also provided.

This report takes into consideration nine bathroom macro-sectors and their main products: bathroom furniture; bathroom furnishings and accessories; WC seats; shower screens and enclosures; whirlpool bathtubs; multifunctional shower booths; bathroom taps, faucets, shower arms; acrylic sinks and bathtubs; ceramic sanitary ware (hydrosanitars).

The countries covered were divided into five areas according their geographical proximity and similarity in market characteristics. These areas are:

In 2015 the total market for bathroom furniture, furnishings and wellness in Europe was worth approximately Euro 10.8 billion, with a 2.8% increase compared to 2013. Consumption at retail prices was roughly Euro 14 billion.

The above mentioned figures include bathroom furniture and accessories, WC seats, bathtubs and whirlpools, hydrosanitars, faucets and shower arms, shower enclosures and multifunctional shower booths. It is 70% of the overall value of the bathroom spaces.

They do not include wall finishings (tiles, marbles, corian, etc, some 8%), behind the wall system (flushing systems, etc, some 12%), replacement of individual pieces, various (some 10%).

Approximately 11 million baths have been newly furnished or renovated in Europe during 2015, for an average value of almost Euro 2,000 (at final prices, including tiles and flushing systems). EBITDA margin is around 7%.

Germany was the major European consumer in the bathroom sector (Euro 2.3 billion in 2015); Italy, the United Kingdom (including also Ireland) and France followed.

The eight top players in the bathroom sector provide about 60% of total production and they are: Roca, Grohe, Ideal Standard, Sanitec, Villeroy & Boch, Duravit, Duscholux and Porcelanosa. But a relevant number of smaller companies, frequently sized Euro 10-15 million turnover, reach higher EBITDAs with a boutique product mix.
