As the largest supplier of stevia sweetener in the world, China witnessed significant changes in its production of stevia sweetener during 2008-2012. In 2008-2010, the capacity dramatically increased by almost three times compared with that in 2008 with a CAGR of about 93.0%. So did the output, increasing by about 66.0% compared with that in 2008 with a CAGR of 29.0%. But the situation took an unexpected turn after 2010, when the output decreased by about 19.0% in 2012 compared with that in 2010 while the capacity stayed relatively stable. What reasons led to these changes? How went the leading companies' financial situation during these years? What were the following measures to cope with the tremendous changes? Are there still opportunities in China's stevia sweetener industry?

The changes in the stevia sweetener market affected its main raw material supply, stevia, in these years. The planting area decreased by about 73.0% in 2010-2012, as well as the output and consumption in China. Would it be better for farmers to keep on planting stevia or change for other cash crops? What's the current planting cost of stevia in China? How is the future development trend of stevia planting in China? This report brings the detailed answers to those questions and explains the distribution of stevia planting as well as the main planting species of stevia in China.

Althought China is the largest supplier of stevia sweetener worldwide, the consumption in the domestic market is small, about 20.0% of the total output is consumed in China. However, it grew relatively stability with a CAGR of 4.9% in 2010-2012. The stevia sweetener is commonly used in the food and beverage industry, which accounted for 80.0% in 2012. But its growth rate has been low during the past few years. What application fields will be the most promising in the future? What's the future trend of stevia sweetener's consumption in China? Executive summary:

Currently, China is the largest producer of stevia sweetener in the world. Almost xxx% of its output were exported in 2011. But its output has experienced a dramatical decrease, about xxx tonnes in 2012 from xxx tonnes in 2010, down by xxx% over 2010, mainly caused by the oversupply of stevia sweetener in 2010 and a relatively gloomy demand from downstream industries in the overseas market.

Meanwhile, the total capacity of stevia sweetener stayed relatively stable in 2010-2012 (at around xxxt/a). This is significantly different from the situation in 2008-2010, when the capacity grew more than three times, reaching about xxxt/a in 2010. This is triggered by the gradually opening market of stevia sweetener worldwide, especially in the EU and the US. Eyeing on the future tremendous demand, stevia sweetener producers expanded their production lines in succession and new manufacturers entered the market.

The great alteration of stevia sweetener had impacted the supply of raw material, stevia dry leaves, in 2008-2012 in China. The output of stevia dry leaves witnessed a fast growth with a CAGR of about xxx% during 2008-2010, while in 2012, it decreased by almost xxx% over 2010, accompanied with a great dropping price of stevia dry leaves during 2010-2012. The dropping price seriously harmed farmers' enthusiasm of stevia planting. It's estimated that the planting area and output of stevia will decrease in 2013.

The domestic consumption of stevia sweetener kept steadily increasing with a CAGR of xxx% in 2010-2012. And the consumption volume came up to xxx tonnes in 2012. Additionally, China consumed more low grade stevia sweetener, different from the high consumption of high grade stevia sweetener in the US.

At present, stevia sweetener is used in the food and beverage industry, pharmaceutical industry and daily chemical industry in China. The food and beverage industry is the most important application field of stevia sweetener in China, representing xxx% of the market share. However, the application in these two industries developed relatively slowly in the past few years, without obvious increasing points. In contrast, the application in the pharmaceutical industry saw a stable growth, due to the emerging China's patent medicine.

In the future, the output of stevia sweetener is predicted to recover and grow thanks to the increasing demand from downstream industries worldwide and the reducing stock from the previous years. Furthermore, the consumption in domestic market is estimated to continuously grow moderately, as before.
