Functional oligosaccharides in China hadn' t achieved commercialization until IMO was produced in large-scale by Baolingbao Biology Co., Ltd. in 1996. From then on, domestic functional oligosaccharide market witnessed a rapid development. Thanks to the consumers' increasing consciousness about health and functional foods, the demand for functional oligosaccharides is increasing stably in China in recent years. Currently, China is one of major functional oligosaccharides producers in Asia, and functional oligosaccharide production in China accounted for about 30% of global total in 2008. There are around XX functional oligosaccharide manufacturers in China. In 2010, its total capacity is around XX tonnes, while its total output is just aboutXX tonnes. The operating rate is about XX%. Besides, most of China' s functional oligosaccharide manufacturers only produce one or two kinds of functional oligosaccharides, and very few manufacturers can produce three kinds. Meanwhile, functional oligosaccharides have been increasing stably by output in recent years with CAGR of XX%.

Most of manufacturers distribute in Shandong, Shaanxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong, where raw materials supply is sufficient. The main producers in China are Baolingbao Biology Co., Ltd.(Baolingbao Biology), Jiangmen Quantum Hi-tech Biological Co., Ltd. (Quantum Hi-tech), Shandong Longlive Bio-technology Co., Ltd. (Shandong Longlive), etc.

Major products in China are IMO, FOS, SBOS, XOS and malto oligosaccharide, with the output of over XX tonnes in 2010 for each product. And most of functional oligosaccharides are produced by enzyme method, and only a few of functional oligosaccharides are produced by extracting method.

Most of China' s functional oligosaccharides are widely used in dairy products, foods, health care products, beverages, pharmaceuticals, etc. among which dairy products is the largest consumption field in China. Though application and function of most functional oligosaccharides are similar, the competition of functional oligosaccharides is not intense for different end use products.

However, there are some substitutes for functional oligosaccharide in domestic market. Its major substitutes include sugar alcohols, inulin, sucrose, etc. However, in different application fields, their superiorities are not the same. In dairy products and health care products, the superiority of functional oligosaccharide is very obvious thanks to its functions of promoting intestinal bacteria breeding and inhibiting harmful bacteria growing. While in food industry, especially in functional foods, sugar alcohol' s superiority is more obvious than that of functional oligosaccharides. Functional oligosaccharides and sugar alcohol will be occupying part of China' s sucrose market in the future.

Thanks to its booming market, functional oligosaccharide industry in China is quite attractive to investors. Foreign investors would face investment risks mainly from technology and after-sale service obstacle, supply and price fluctuation of raw material, competition from rivals and foreign exchange fluctuation.

As one of the most important emerging markets and production bases of functional oligosaccharide in the world, China will provide many investment opportunities in this sector in the near future such as expanding product portfolio and developing high value-added products.
