China' s aniline and nitrobenzene industry has witnessed booming development before 2008. However, global financial crisis broke out at the end of 2008. It began to enter a dark period. Thanks to China' s stimulus policies and slow recovery of global economy, it has recovered since the H2 2009. As the largest producer and consumer of aniline around the world, China will enjoy promising prospect in the long run.

China' s aniline and nitrobenzene industry has changed a lot in the past three years, both in production and consumption. Along with the launch of more large scale aniline and nitrobenzene installations, China' s aniline and nitrobenzene industry is becoming more and more concentrated and powerful.

As to consumption, though the end use sections of aniline are still concentrated in MDI, rubber ingredient, dyestuff and organic pigment, pharmaceutical and pesticide, cyclohexylamine, diphenylamine and others in China, its consumption structure has changed a little. What has happened in the past three years?

Executive summary:

In recent years, China' s aniline production has maintained a strong growth, thanks to great demand from downstream industries, especially MDI and rubber ingredients. Meanwhile, as the supporting facility for aniline production, China' s nitrobenzene industry also witnessed fast development thanks to strong growth of aniline.

As of Oct. 2010, there have been mainly xx aniline producers in China, with total capacity of xxxxt/a. All these active aniline producers also produce nitrobenzene to guarantee their aniline production. Now, most of them are located in East China and North China, which is close to the end users of aniline.

Impacted by global financial crisis, the growth rates of aniline and nitrobenzene production have slowed down from 2008 to 2009. However, thanks to the stimulus package from Chinese government and slow recovery of global economy, the aniline and nitrobenzene production in China has recovered in the second half of 2009 and keeps uptrend in 2010.

Compared with output and consumption of aniline, the export and import volume is usually small in China. After meeting the domestic demand, the annual export volume of aniline was below xxxx tonnes in China from 2008 to Oct. 2010. Meanwhile, the annual import volume of aniline was commonly below xxxx tonnes in that period, although it kept fast growing in 2009 and Jan. ~Oct. 2010 thanks to increasing demand from domestic market, especially from MDI.

Generally, the price fluctuation of aniline and nitrobenzene is similar to that of benzene. Moreover, since the quantity of commercial nitrobenzene is small in China because the production line of nitrobenzene is normally served as supporting facility of aniline, the price of nitrobenzene generally affects that of aniline indirectly. Of course, the change in supply and demand of aniline and nitrobenzene also can influence their price fluctuation in the short term.

In China, aniline is mainly used in the production of MDI, rubber ingredient, dyestuff and organic pigment, cylclohexylamine, pharmaceutical, pesticide, etc. MDI is the largest consumption field of aniline, with xx% of the total consumption in 2009, and the next is rubber ingredient. MDI and rubber ingredient will still be the two main drivers for aniline demand. Now, aniline consumption is mainly distributed in East China in which four MDI producers, and most rubber ingredients, dyestuff and pigment, pesticides producers are concentrated.

As to nitrobenzene consumption, over xx% nitrobenzene is consumed in aniline production in China, and other consumption fields include p-aminodiphenylamine, m-dinitrobenzene, and sodium metanitrobenzene sulfonate, and so on.
