Market Overview

The sustained low oil prices have largely impacted GCC public finances and has hampered private investment due to lack of liquidity from banks. Tight financial measures have reduced the flexibility to do business in the GCC countries. Budget for construction projects - when projects were not cancelled or delayed - became tighter and delays in payment became longer, even for public projects. The insecure atmosphere has lead distributors and manufacturers of bathroom products to be more cautious even when the client is a government body. This has led to an overall slowdown of the economy, impacting the bathroom market for most GCC countries.

In Saudi Arabia, on-going structural reforms are expected to have a great impact on the economy and uncertainty with regards to the outcome remains full. Along with economic measures, on-going societal changes is leading the bathroom market to long-term transformation: the demographic transition will lead to smaller housing units (smaller bathroom products per dwelling), the increasing level of education and empowerment of the Saudis (Saudisation), should increase the purchase power of the population. More protectionism and an effort to boost the economic diversification through the creation of SME's (Small and Medium Enterprise) should lead local manufacturers to strengthen their shares in the bathroom market while the increasing GCC economic integration should favor regional manufacturers. Access to the Saudi bathroom market is expected to be more difficult in the future. The introduction of new tax such as a common VAT from 2018 and an increasing common regulation may lead the price to increase in the coming years while protecting the market from imported products.

As GCC countries continue to suffer from a shortage in housing, the bathroom markets should continue to grow in the coming years. Even though 2017 is expected to be better than 2016 for the whole region, the growth should be somewhat limited but most observers believe that 2018 should experience a real growth for most countries.
