An emerging Asian middle class with higher disposable incomes and a growing preference for Western food and drink is becoming a major driving force of trends in the region. This is also matched by a need for convenience, with more people entering the formal workforce reducing the time to prepare and cook meals. This is apparent in a growing demand for coffee among younger, urbanised Asian consumers, despite tea being a well-established product throughout the region. Similarly, wine is more sought after in China, expected to become the second largest market in the world in terms of consumption in the next five years.
Even the Japanese are shifting away from their traditional, healthy diets towards incorporating more poultry and dairy, particularly cheese, into their meals. The Asia region is expected to see robust growth across the board over the next five years, with even traditional areas like tea experiencing faster growth than in more developed regions. A potential cooling of trade tensions took place in December, which could be positive for the industry in 2019 but has already been subject to so much volatility that this temporary detente is unlikely to last.
