The food and drink industry looks set to be one of the sectors most impacted by a trade war outbreak involving the US, Canada, Mexico, the EU and China, with products such as orange juice, whiskey, fruit and vegetables targets for tariffs. We do not know the full extent of tariffs and how far the retaliation will go, but it will at the very least have a mixed impact on specific product items, with some more exposed than others. Some tariffs are designed to target certain industries, while others have been selected because they will not have a huge impact on domestic consumer demand. The tariffs will not affect our topline growth forecasts for now, but at the company level, this may cause some significant turmoil for US-based companies with large international presences. Trends towards healthification will ramp up even more over 2018-2019, and global companies continue to respond to this trend by investing in new startups and products, in an effort to reinvigorate stagnating sales.
