Real-time PCR is one of the most widely adopted molecular biology techniques, performed by over half of life science researchers in the United States. Customers now have many types of instrumentation to choose from, including instruments that are positioned by suppliers as being ideal for individual use by virtue of size, price point and/or range of applications supported. The Mini-Opticon™ Real-Time PCR System was the first of these personalized instruments (commercially available since the mid-2000's) and the newest is the Lightcycler® Nano Real-Time PCR System, introduced to the US-market in late 2011.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this report, Real-Time PCR Instrumentation: Taking a Look Using the RateMyProduct™ Automated Product Assessment Tool, are to:

  • Demonstrate the utility of the RateMyProduct™ tool to generate meaningful - and actionable - information as it relates to new product evelopment.
  • Compare how customers perceive different real-time PCR instruments across seven predictors of success.
  • Generate an instrumentation-specific baseline for comparison.
  • Understand the relative importance of each feature and how they are affected by their relationship to price and brand.
  • Glean insight as to which features are most valuedby customers in terms of usefulness, innovation and uniqueness.
  • Assess the reaction price and its effect on important customer behaviors.
  • Understand the effectiveness communicating product value.
  • Create individual RateMyProduct™ profiles for each instrument evaluated.
  • Provide a model for how the RateMyProduct™ might be used after product launch to gauge success.

In this report, we evaluated seven "individual use" real-time PCR instruments using BioInformatics LLC's proprietary methodology RateMyProduct™. RateMyProduct is a new automated service from BioInformatics LLC that delivers fast, directional information on a product's likelihood of market success. This highly structured approach is based on best practices developed over the course of conducting more than 100 product concept tests for a wide variety of different types of life science products: from complex instrumentation systems to new reagent solutions. Our experience has allowed us to develop a robust methodology that quickly generates information most useful in predicting product success.

Besides scores on each of the seven attributes, the scores for each indicator are analyzed to obtain an aggregated RMP Score. Scores for each brand of instrument are compared to an industry benchmark to provide an understanding as to how your "individual use" real-time PCR instrument is perceived relative to the other five "individual use" real-time PCR instruments tested.

METHODOLOGY

RateMyProduct is an automated product assessment tool available exclusively through BioInformatics LLC. RateMyProduct allows scientific tool suppliers to obtain performance metrics on a company's product/service offering or product/service concept.

Product and marketing managers can use RateMyProduct by submitting an online form that includes details on:

  • Customer need that the product addresses
  • Key features
  • Price
  • Product messaging

To produce Real-Time PCR Instrumentation: Taking a Look Using the RateMyProduct™ Automated Product Assessment Tool, we completed RateMyProduct online forms for seven "individual use" real-time PCR instruments, using wherever possible the actual text provided by each of the suppliers in their marketing collateral. List price, or best pricing information available through public web sites was used. Images were obtained through "Google Images" or the supplier web sites. The following instruments were evaluated:

  • Illumina® Eco™ Real-Time PCR System
  • Qiagen Rotor-Gene® 2plex Platform
  • Qiagen Rotor-Gene® 2plex HRM Platform
  • Roche LightCycler® Nano Real-Time PCR System
  • Thermo Scientific PikoReal® 24 Real-Time PCR System

One hundred North American life scientists who currently perform real-time PCR in their work evaluated each product (70% Academic, 30% Industrial). They read the product description and then completed the standard RateMyProduct feedback form that was tuned specifically to each product's brand, features, and pricing.

Prospective customers rated each product on seven key predictors or attributes associated with market success:

  • Market Receptivity
  • Innovation
  • Product Utility
  • Differentiation
  • Purchase Criteria
  • Pricing Effectiveness
  • Marketing Effectiveness

The scores for each indicator are analyzed to obtain the RMP Score. A high RMP Score indicates that an instrument has met or exceeded industry averages in the combined analysis of the attributes under consideration.
