INTRODUCTION

This report is an update of an earlier (2005) BCC Research report, whose goal is to determine the current status of the worldwide electronic display materials market and assess its growth over a five-year period from 2013 through 2018. The market has changed greatly since the last edition of this report was published, when cathode ray tube (CRT) technology still had an important position in the market and CRT's main competitors were rear projection (including digital light processing), liquid crystal diode (LCD) and plasma flat panel displays. Today, CRT and rear projection displays have largely disappeared from the market and plasma's star appears to be fading. Today, LCD displays dominate the market, but face growing competition from organic light emitting diode (OLED) and other new technologies, including flexible and transparent displays.

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The overall goal of this report is to provide the reader with an understanding of the changing display market and the ways in which it influences the consumption of the different materials used to fabricate displays. Specific objectives of the report include segmenting and quantifying the display material market in 2012 and analyzing its potential growth in the years through 2018. Additional objectives include discussing recent technological developments and patent trends, and analyzing the economic, political and legal/regulatory environment within which the display industry will evolve over the next five years.

SCOPE AND FORMAT

The scope of this report encompasses the key materials used in the major types of electronic displays. BCC Research analyzes the various classes of materials technologies, identifies the major players, determines the current status of each, examines their impact on future display markets, and presents forecasts of growth over the next five years. Technological issues, including the latest trends, are discussed. Other pertinent factors are reviewed, such as material processing and distribution, the need for special materials and the expanded use of certain displays.

The report analyzes the materials industry on a worldwide basis, both from a manufacturing and consumption point of view. It examines government and industry support for materials research and the display organizations in major regions of the world. Materials used for different display types are compared by application, property and value.
