INTRODUCTION

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

BCC's goal in conducting this study was to determine the current status of the worldwide demand for medical ultrasound devices and to assess its growth potential over the five-year period from 2011 to 2016. We were particularly interested in the stimulation in demand for ultrasound sensor technology brought on by the aging of the baby-boomer population in the U.S., Europe and Asia. In addition, we were interested in the market potential for new emerging medical ultrasound sensor technologies.

Our key objective was to present a comprehensive analysis of the current medical ultrasound sensor technology markets and its future direction.

REASONS FOR DOING THIS STUDY

In addition to their traditional functions in obstetrics/gynecology, cardiology and urology, ultrasound sensor technologies are one of the most accepted medical diagnostic imaging techniques in application in the world today. Hence, we were interested in determining the different ultrasound sensor applications and examining their growth potential. We also were especially interested in determining the types of technologies currently in use and their specific applications.

BCC has over the past several years examined the medical technology industry. Within this period, ultrasound devices have rapidly emerged as an effective diagnostic imaging tool with diverse applications. As a consequence, the use of this technology is changing fast. Therefore, we wanted to conduct a thorough and detailed analysis of this technology and project its growth potential.

CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE STUDY AND INTENDED AUDIENCE

We have compiled a study of current ultrasound device markets and new emerging ultrasound technology markets. We present the economic environment of the medical ultrasound technology industry, technological descriptions and issues, applications, market factors and potential, and project growth trends for the period of 2011 to 2016. We also project market values and the distribution of medical ultrasound technologies by the major market segments. This study will be of interest to the medical diagnostic device manufacturing industry, medical equipment suppliers, medical ultrasound device manufacturers and their distributors, sensor system developers and manufacturers, and research institutions. It will also be of interest to sensor software developer companies as well as sensor hardware device producers, semiconductor device manufacturers and electronic component manufacturers.

SCOPE AND FORMAT

The scope of this study encompasses the major types of medical ultrasound technologies. BCC analyzes each medical ultrasound technology application type, determines its current market status, examines its impact on future markets and presents forecasts of growth over the next five years. Technological issues including the latest trends are discussed.

BCC analyzes the industry on a worldwide basis, both from a manufacturing and demand point of view. We examine government regulation and medical ultrasound industry organizations and activities in the major regions of the world.

METHODOLOGY

BCC presents an analysis of each ultrasound technology application and its estimated demand in 2011. Our estimated values are based on what buying entities can be expected to pay in un-depreciated dollars. We then analyze the potential applications in the field of medicine and forecast the market size for 2011 and 2016. We also analyze the demand for ultrasound by major geographical market segment. All tables and figures are calculated in 2011 constant U.S. dollars.

INFORMATION SOURCES

BCC analyzed data produced by U.S. government agencies, industry trade associations and international organizations to obtain data for this study. We also spoke with manufacturers of various ultrasound technology types in the United States, the European Union and in Japan. In addition, we compiled data from current financial and trade information sources.

Carlet Auguste is president and CEO of Efficiency Engineering Inc., a consulting firm that provides technology engineering services to corporations and nonprofit organizations. He consults regularly with government and private industry companies from a variety of engineering fields to help create technological innovations for the private sector as well as government customers needing technological solutions for national defense.
