Abstract

REPORT HIGHLIGHTS

The North American market for technical and advanced structural ceramics was $3.2 billion in 2010 and $3.4 billion in 2011. This value is expected to increase to $4.4 billion in 2016, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.1% between 2011 and 2016.

Bioceramics, the largest segment constituting 64% of the 2011 total technical and advanced ceramics market, should continue to hold that much of the market over the next five years.

The advanced armor and military market is expected to show slower growth than in the recent past due to the gradual U.S. disengagement from Iraq and Afghanistan.

INTRODUCTION

SCOPE OF THE REPORT

The qualitative and quantitative judgments in this report represent a valuable contribution to the knowledge of leading companies in advanced and structural ceramic materials, components, processing techniques, applications and markets. Though emphasis is on company expertise and their market niche, direction is given in each structural ceramic application category and their respective properties, processing technologies, and properties. The increasing global nature of the advanced and structural ceramic market is evidenced through the companies discussed and their subsidiaries.

INFORMATION SOURCES AND METHODOLOGY

Both primary and secondary research methodologies were used in preparing this study. Findings are based on information derived from interviews with developers, producers and potential producers of advanced structural ceramic materials, components and powders; industry experts; and people who perform research and development (R&D) on monolithic ceramic and ceramic matrix composites. End users were contacted to evaluate the projected demand for technical and advanced structural ceramics.

Secondary data were obtained from trade publications, technical journals, government statistics and BCC Research databases. Financial values are presented in constant dollars. Historical financial values are for the year given.

ANALYST CREDENTIALS

Anna Welch Crull, scientist, business analyst and experienced consultant, is qualified in electrochemistry, polymers, membrane materials and advanced materials. She has a broad business background and has worked with BCC (now BCC Research) for 31 years and authored more than 114 technical/marketing and business reports, helped establish 10 technical newsletters, and assisted in numerous special consulting studies and conferences for more than 35 corporations and intelligence for the U.S. government entities. She has worked for the U.S. Army Materials Command on rocket science, propellants, membranes and explosives. Ms. Crull is a graduate of the School of Engineering, University of Mississippi and holds a master's degree in chemistry from the University of Missouri.
