The power market in Finland is dominated by thermal fuel sources such as coal, oil and gas, which held a combined share of power generation of over 50% in 2012. The country is now aiming to reduce its dependence upon thermal fuel sources in order to diversify the range of sources used for power generation and reduce greenhouse emissions. The government is diversifying power generation by providing incentives and subsidies for renewable power sources.

Finland possesses substantial potential for wind power and solar power. In order to achieve its goal of a 38% share for the renewable energy in the country's total energy consumption by 2020, the government has introduced numerous legislations and is actively promoting the development of renewable energy.
