The SaaS deployment model has been the key to success for third-generation platforms for mobile content management and delivery to date.

The focus of this report is the mobile content management and delivery (MCMD) systems that CSPs use to support the lifecycle of digital media from the collection of content from the content provider to its delivery to the customer. MCMD includes the content provider portal, the customer portal, the transcoding and adaptation of content for different device types, and digital rights management.

The report identifies the current generation of MCMD platforms as the third generation, which are focused on supporting application stores, developer ecosystems, network APIs and are offered by vendors as SaaS. This contrasts with the first-generation platform, which focused on supporting a particular type of simple content, and the second-generation platform, which focused on unifying these separate stovepipe solutions.
