As ADAS systems have increased in terms of their capabilities, the markets served by mirrors and cameras have begun to converge more and more. Traditional, simple mirrors are a thing of the past. Drivers no longer only look in their rear-view mirror to see cars approaching from behind; mirrors, especially interior mirrors, are frequently used as information display screens, with the information they display having been captured by a number of miniature cameras located around the car.

There is no doubt that consumers like the convenience and help which a rear-view camera and its associated display screen provides. However, the major force behind integrating camera technology into cars, and specifically integrating their output's display into mirrors (or linking this to a dedicated display screen), has been OEMs wanting to stay ahead of impending legislation which will make this kind of technology mandatory.
