Key Motivations and Outcomes:

The wireless connectivity market is growing rapidly in both size and complexity. New technologies continue to emerge, and existing technologies are evolving to address new market opportunities and support new features and enhancements, while innovative combinations of different standards are beginning to evolve at the chipset level. In addition, the wireless connectivity landscape is extremely competitive and becoming increasingly consolidated as vendors and solution providers seek new opportunities across the Internet of Things (IoT). ABI Research has developed a comprehensive and granular market dataset that allows clients to identify and better target the largest growth opportunities for short-range wireless technologies by market segment, understand potential gaps in existing wireless portfolios, get a better perspective on the wider wireless competitive landscape, and gain insight into the transition timelines from legacy to new technologies to help plan their future product roadmaps and investment decisions more effectively.

Device Shipments and Connectivity Attach Rates:

The first step in the forecasting process is to collate global end device shipments from ABI Research market datasets and other sources. These include 5G Mobile Devices, Features, and Technologies: Vendors, Trends, and Forecasts (MD-MDEV-124), Smart Home Hardware (MD-HASH-104), Mobile Accessories and Wearables Market Share and Forecasts (MD-WEAR-110), and many others.

Attach rates for each wireless connectivity technology, e.g., Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 802.15.4, Near Field Communication (NFC), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), etc., are applied to the end device shipments. For example, as 100% of smartphones incorporate Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies, the attach rate for each technology is 100%. This attach rate is used to calculate the total number of device shipments that support a particular connectivity technology. The wireless connectivity attach rates are derived from a number of sources and assumptions, including:

Existing wireless connectivity forecasts within ABI Research datasets. For example, MD-HAS includes forecasts for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 802.15.4 for each end device. MD-WCMT leverages these existing attach rates to ensure alignment and consistency across all deliverables.

Public and private information collected from telephone and face-to-face interviews with key industry players.

Company and product information obtained from websites, conferences, and other sources, including financial reports.

Available teardown information and internal model analysis. For example, NFC attach rates are derived from internal smartphone model forecasts on a quarterly basis. Quarterly smartphone unit shipments are gathered for each smartphone vendor and model, and whether this device supports NFC technology. The numbers are totaled to calculate a percentage of smartphones shipping with NFC technology in that quarter.

For future years, assumptions are made around the anticipated growth and adoption of certain technologies, standard development, ecosystem maturity level, changing levels of penetration, the emergence of new technologies and anticipated migration to new standards, new and anticipated product announcements, and technology roadmaps. These are based on internal projections and key discussions with the industry, and are factored in to produce medium- and longer-term attach rate forecasts.

Wireless Connectivity Chipset Market:

Building from the end device forecasts and attach rates, the model converts device shipments into Integrated Circuit (IC) shipments. Additional factors, such as manufacturing and delivery lead times and Year-over-Year (YoY) growth rates, are taken into account. The resulting IC number is, therefore, higher than the number of end devices being shipped in a particular year. This provides the top-level chipset shipment volumes for each connectivity technology.

From the total IC volume, the IC market is further segmented into standalone chipsets, combo chipsets (chipsets that integrate multiple connectivity technologies), and platforms (chipsets that integrate multiple connectivity technologies and a cellular baseband). Combo chipsets are segmented into individual combo types, e.g., Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth and 802.15.4. Platforms are also segmented into different types, e.g., platform + Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GNSS, and platform and GNSS only, among others. Attach rates for each of these combo and platform ICs are calculated based on device teardowns, research interviews, financial reports, vendor product portfolios, and other information sources. Assumptions are made on the future trajectory of these different IC combinations based on regular discussions with the industry.

An Average Selling Price (ASP) for each end device is applied, resulting in the generation of IC revenue for each IC type. ASPs were derived primarily from information given by suppliers and IC teardowns. This information was amalgamated and weighted according to companies' shares of the market and their perceived influence over it. The information was then qualified using available public information, historical data, Bill of Materials (BOM) analysis, and comparisons of similar products. Finally, the ASP data were compared and contrasted with manufacturing costs sourced from interviews and from additional sources in order to accurately reflect realistic ASPs in the study. The results of this model are then cross-referenced with the data gathered from chipset vendors, as well as from additional information sources. Together, this provides a total volume of standalone, combo, and platform IC shipments, and revenue by technology and end market.

The total Wi-Fi chipset volumes are segmented further to provide insight into protocol forecasts and Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) configurations. Based on device teardowns, research interviews, financial reports, vendor product portfolios, and other information sources, assumptions are made to determine the total proportion of Wi-Fi chipsets that are leveraging different standards, such as 802.11n, 802.11ac, or 802.11ax. Attach rates are applied at an end device level for each protocol, e.g., 6% of smartphones are anticipated to ship with 802.11ax technology in 2019. Discussions with Wi-Fi chipset vendors and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) help shape future forecasts around the anticipated uptake and adoption of new standards and the transition away from legacy technologies. The same process is leveraged for MIMO and Multiple User-MIMO (MU-MIMO) configurations.

Vendor Shares:

ABI Research provides quarterly vendor shares for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, and GNSS technologies for smartphones and tablets. Vendor shares for all other devices are grouped under "others." These shares are calculated from a combination of "bottom up" inputs given by suppliers, alongside public and further secondary information from various news services, whitepapers, company and product portfolios, and financial reports, among others. This is also cross-referenced against input from interviews and then tested against a "top down" analysis of the market from ABI Research's internal IC shipment volumes.

Data are regularly shared with key industry players and stakeholders for validation. Feedback received from different parts of the value chain are then harmonized and the results enable ABI Research to tweak our modeling parameters and assumptions to align with the overall industry expectations.
