Abstract

The uptake of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless standard is a global phenomenon driven by service providers' need for more network capacity, latency reduction, and enhanced user experience. LTE is a natural evolution from GSM/HSPA, CDMA, or TD-SCDMA networks and is standardized by 3GPP as either FDD or TDD. The future roadmap for LTE now includes LTE Advanced or LTE-A (backward compatible with both FD-LTE and TD-LTE), which was approved by the ITU in January 2012 and some service providers have started positioning themselves to deploy LTE-A already. This report examines the ecosystem and outlook for LTE base stations with an emphasis on RAN equipment focusing on macro, micro, and pico outdoor base stations and small cells. The report looks at base station topology and the uptake of small cells and remote radio heads (RRHs) as elements of the distributed base station. This report also surveys the merchant processor LTE base station baseband ASSP/SoC suppliers.
