C&F retail market value in CE region increased by 3.8% in 2014

After a few difficult years, the clothing and footwear retail market in Central Europe (CE) returned to more rapid growth in 2014. Moreover, the situation is expected to improve further in the coming months. Last year, every country market saw growth when measured in the local currency, but in the euro only Czech Republic saw a decline, which is attributed to the weakening exchange rate of the Czech koruna.

Increase in per capita disposable income of Polish households in 2014

The average monthly per capita disposable income of Polish households stood at around PLN 1,340 in 2014, which means that it increased, in real terms, by 3.2% year on year, according to a survey of household budgets carried out by the Central Statistical Office (GUS). Household expenditure as a share of available income was 80.5% in 2014 (versus 81.7% in 2013).

In the past few years, consumers of cosmetics in CE became price-sensitive as a result of more difficult market conditions. They are looking for discounts and promotions. At the same time, they expect higher product quality and additional store services. Also, brand loyalty remains low in the region.

AmRest is interested in acquiring the operator of KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants on the Romanian market, management board member Wojciech Mroczynski revealed on 30 June. The acquisition would represent a natural step for the group, he said.

PIH: Lower sales at small-format stores in May 2015

Retail sales at small-format stores of up to 300 m2 decreased by 4.2% in May 2015 as compared to the equivalent period of 2014, the Polish Trade Chamber (PIH) announced. On a month-on-month basis, sales in the sector were 5.8% higher.

Consumer confidence in Poland rallies in June 2015

Consumer confidence and expectations improved noticeably in June as compared with the month before, according to a monthly survey by the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The current indicator of consumer confi-dence (BWUK) gained 3.2 points from May to stand at -10.4 points. Nearly all component sub-indicators of the BWUK were higher in June, led by consumers' expectations about the domestic economy (up by 9.4 points). The only measure to decline (slightly) was ability to make important purchases (down by 0.6 points). In comparison with June 2014, the BWUK was 5.0 points higher.

4Outdoor.pl's outdoor market barometer increases in May 2015

Sales at 15 stores in Poland, operated by nine outdoor clothing and equipment retailers that were covered by the 4Outdoor market barometer, an index compiled by 4Outdoor.pl, increased 8.4% year on year in May 2015. This was the eighth increase in a row after three consecutive months in which revenues at the stores decreased on a yearly basis.

Intermarche targets 21% private label share in 2015

Private labels accounted for 20.4% of total sales at Intermarche supermarkets in Poland in 2014, and the chain plans to increase that to 21% this year, CEO Krzysztof Waligorski told portalspozywczy.pl. Intermarche supermarkets in France derive 30% of their sales from private labels, which shows the potential for further increases in Poland, Mr Waligorski said.

Intermarche has 221 supermarkets in Poland.

Piotr i Pawel building central warehouse in Teresin

Construction has got underway in Teresin near Warsaw on a 40,000 m2 warehouse centre for Piotr i Pawel, the supermarket chain. The facility is being erected under a built-to-suit arrangement with MLP Group, the listed developer of logistic parks. It will serve as a central warehouse for Piotr i Pawel, which is based in Poznan.

Beer, cigarettes and vodka account for 40% of transactions in small-format stores

Beer, cigarettes and vodka are the most often-purchased product groups in small-format stores in Poland, accounting for a combined 40% of all transactions, according to a study by Centrum Monitorowania Rynku (CMR). Salty and sweet snacks represent approximately 10%.

KappAhl posts lower sales in Poland in Q3 2014/2015

Swedish fashion retailer KappAhl generated sales revenues of €81m in the three months to May 2015, i.e. the third quarter of its current fiscal year. This represents a decrease of 7% year on year. In local currency terms, sales dropped by 12% y-o-y.

H&M reports rise in Polish sales in H1 2014/2015

Swedish fashion retailer H&M registered sales revenues in Poland of SEK 2.0.5bn (€217.7m) in the first half of its current fiscal year (1 December 2014 - 28 February 2015). This represents a growth of 17% compared with the same period in the previous year. At the same time, in local currency terms, sales in Poland increased by 10%.

Lancerto sees room for 60 stores in Poland, contemplates foreign expansion

There is room on the Polish market for 55-60 Lancerto stores, Tomasz Ciapala, co-founder and vice president of the menswear brand, told Puls Biznesu. Lancerto has 33 branches in Poland at the moment, all managed directly by the firm. The company will continue to expand its network at a rate of 10 stores per year in the next few years, Mr Ciapala said.

Opineo.pl: sklep.wittchen.com was most recommended e-store from CFA sector in 2014

Sklep.wittchen.com was the most recommended online clothing/footwear/accessories (CFA) store among Polish e-shoppers using opineo.pl, a consumer reviews website, in 2014. Next came eobuwie.pl and unhuman.pl.

Ziaja is best recognised domestic cosmetics brand

Ziaja, the Polish brand and retailer of skin care products, is the best known domestic cosmetics brand in terms of spontaneous recall, according to a survey by ARC Rynek i Opinia.

Drugstore chains strengthen their position in all CE countries

CHI Polska to move more strongly into office market

CHI Polska has about 60% of its outlets in shopping malls, but the company plans to diversify its location types in the next few years, notably by increasing its presence in the office market, Michal Nowak, Property and Expansion Director at CHI Polska, told propertynews.pl.

AmRest: Poland has room for well over 100 Starbucks cafes

The Polish market can support well over 100 Starbucks cafes, Wojciech Mroczynski, man-agement board member at AmRest, said on 30 June. At the moment AmRest operates 38 Starbucks cafes in Poland. The group plans to open five new outlets this year.

Mex Polska to acquire Pijalnia Wodki i Piwa master franchise holder

A General Shareholders' Meeting of Mex Polska on 10 June authorised the company to acquire 100% of shares in Mex Master, the holder of the master franchise license for Pijalnie Wodki I Piwa bistros, in exchange for 1.3 million newly issued Mex Polska shares priced at PLN 3 (€0.7) apiece.

Starbucks to diversify locations, formats

Starbucks plans to diversify its formats and location types in Poland, Adam Mularuk, President Starbucks Central Europe at AmRest, indicated in an interview with portalspozywczy.pl. The brand intends to open smaller outlets focused on takeaway service near transport hubs.

TH Real Estate acquires 50% stake in three Neinver retail centres in Poland

TH Real Estate, a global investment management company, has completed the purchase of a 50% interest in two outlet centres and one retail park in Poland owned by Neinver - Factory Annopol in Warsaw and Factory Krakow and Futura Park in Krakow.

Shopping centres around railway stations offer great potential

There are around 450 shopping centres in Poland, while an additional 30 are under construction. Likewise, Poland's high streets also grow. What should be noted is that retail developments around trans-portation hubs and railway stations offer a growth potential which has not been fully exploited yet, portalsamorzadowy.pl reported.

There is still room for outlet centres

The first outlet centres appeared in Poland in 2002. Their number has grown to 12 now, and more facilities of this kind can still emerge, according to a study prepared by CBRE.

Martes Sport plans 45-50 openings and foreign debut in 2016

Martes Sport plans to open at least 45-50 regular stores, totalling 28,000 m2, in the course of next year, which means that it should inaugurate its 200th branch in Q4 2016, retailnet.pl reported quoting head of development Tomasz Barchanski. Leases for 70% of these locations have already been signed, or are about to be signed, he said.

Sales at Grupa Optimum up 6% y-o-y in Q1 2015

Grupa Optimum, the distributor of luxury cosmetics and sporting equipment owned by Empik Media & Fashion (EMF), generated sales revenues of PLN 63m (€15.3m) in the first quarter of 2015. This represents an increase of 6% year on year. The growth was driven primarily by another strong quarter from the Converse brand, particularly in Poland, EMF said.

Martes Sport targets PLN 600m revenues in 2016

Martes Sport, the Polish sporting goods chain, plans to increase its revenues to PLN 600m (€144m) in 2016, with EBITDA projected to surpass PLN 80m (€19.2m), retailnet.pl reported.
