The National Health Fund (NFZ) spent a total of PLN 4.42bn (€10.5bn) on drug reimbursement in the first five months of 2015. This represents an increase of 7.3% compared with the same period a year earlier. The figure constitutes 40.5% of the Fund's total reimbursement budget for 2015, which is PLN 10.9bn (€2.59bn).

Expenditures on the reimbursement of medicines, foods for particular nutritional uses and medical devices available upon prescription in the pharmacy channel amounted to PLN 3.33bn (€791m) in January-May 2015, up 8.3% y-o-y and 43% of the annual plan (PLN 7.74bn or €1.84bn).

Mechanical ventillation providers urge NFZ to pay for home-based care

The number of patients requiring home-based mechanical ventillation currently stands at around 3,000 and keeps rising - it could increase by several hundred persons before the end of 2015 alone and is likely to reach as many as 8,000 in the next few years, according to estimates by the Nationwide Association of Mechanical Ventillation Providers (OZSWM). This is a consequence of demographic and social trends, such as rising incidence of chronic diseases and genetic disorders, or more cases of severe injuries sustained in traffic accidents.

Polish researchers looking for business partner for rapid sepsis test

A group of researchers from the Jagiellonian University's Collegium Medicum have developed an innovative rapid test for sepsis and are looking for a commercial partner to help bring it to market, Rzeczpospolita reported. Thanks to the new method, the test process takes only six hours.

The invention has already been patented, but the researchers need funds to carry out clinical trials on a large group of patients. Hence the search for a commercial partner.

If a partner is found, the method could be introduced into diagnostic practice within two to three years.
