Key View: Despite its considerable investment potential due to low levels of connectivity in rural and economically disadvantaged areas, Latin America will continue to be challenging for telecoms players in the long term. We have introduced 5G forecasts to 2029 in this Q121 update. The business case for 5G has been undermined by intense price competition for 'good enough' 3G/4G services with return on investment still uncertain, so telcos will look to the enterprise sector for the biggest potential in 5G uptake. Broadband connectivity demand increased substantially during the Covid-19 pandemic, with little signs of this decreasing after the crisis. However, it must also become more than about delivering faster streaming content, and a doubling-down on fibre deployment is a welcome first step in a fresh approach. However, traditional telcos are capital-intensive and unsustainable in the long term; before the decade is out, we can expect to see surviving players reinvent themselves as service providers, leaving infrastructure to a new breed of specialised providers.
