Abstract

Developing High Throughput Technologies for Protein Analysis

As most drug targets are proteins, there is a vested interest in high throughput technologies for proteins. Proteins are 3D fragile structures unlike DNA chips, so concept of surface chemistry and density requirements need to be evaluated before plunging into chip manufacturing.

Demand for Tools which Promise to Hasten the Drug Discovery Process

The pharmaceutical industry is now under tremendous pressure from dwindling drug pipelines, no recent launch of potential blockbuster drugs and expiry of patents for the present blockbuster drugs. Pharmaceutical companies are now looking for tools that would hasten the drug discovery process and improve productivity. Any tool or technology that has been found to have these benefits is being actively pursued.

Automation Not Living Up to the Expectations

Technologies such as HTS as well as automation of the drug discovery process have not lead to any significant increase in the drug pipelines. The assumption of increasing the probability of a successful drug discovery by screening more number of compounds has not yielded results. So the goal is to make these technologies yield maximum output.
