目次

Understanding where the WiMAX industry is going requires taking a look at what the biggest players are doing. “The Top 22: Operators Who Will Make or Break WiMAX” report is the result of extensive research and analysis of these players. We have conducted direct interviews with each of these operators in order to understand their take on WiMAX, their market strategy going forward, their current deployment status, the challenges they have faced while deploying their networks, their weaknesses and strengths, their future plans and prospects, as well as their deployment roadmaps and projections for 2009-2010.

The analysis covers several variables including: spectrum details, investors and cash available, WiMAX target markets and services, geographical coverage, service applications, equipment deployed, base stations and CPE vendors, backhaul, mobile WiMAX upgrade plans, LTE plans, use of femtocells, ARPU and subscribers.

Operators selected for the report enjoy two key conditions: have deep enough pockets to deploy major networks and have access to sufficient spectrum to be profitable in the long term. In fact 46% of operators interviewed have 50MHz or more of spectrum, while 45% have more than US$100 million in cash. These operators include obvious names such as Clearwire, and also operators who currently enjoy a relatively small subscriber base but for whom Maravedis believes there is great potential, such as Scartel (Russia). Other such “strategic” operators include: UQ Communications (Japan), Far EasTone (Taiwan), BSNL (India) and Telmex International.

The top 22 operators currently account for almost 50% of the total number of WiMAX subscribers worldwide. In Q3 2008, the 6th edition of the WiMAXCounts Quarterly Report showed that the worldwide subscriber base accounted for 2.68 million customers - nearly 1.24 million of these belong to the top 22 operators in the industry. Various operators analyzed in this report still have a very small subscriber base however, and in some cases have not even commercially launched their networks yet. These operators are included in this report because of their strategic importance and growth potential in the wireless market.
