Wireless charging technology is used for the transmission of electrical current between two objects without any physical connection. This electrical current is used to charge various devices such as wearable electronics, smartphones, or industrial equipment. The ease and convenience of using wireless charging technology has led to its growing demand. Wireless charging has eliminated the use of cables for charging, thereby providing a convenient way to charge electronic devices, wirelessly.

The companies involved in the development of wireless charging technologies are working towards developing a transmitter (Charger) and receiver. However, due to lack of standards pertaining to conformity, as the charger developed by one vendor is not able to transfer power to a receiver developed by another vendor. This is mainly due to compatibility issues between charger and receiver. Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP), and Power Matters Alliance (PMA) are working towards the development of standards to ensure conformity. Earlier these associations were developing a standard based on the different types of technology used in this market. However, recently Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) and Power Matters Alliance (PMA) have come together, so as to develop standards based on magnetic induction. Magnetic induction has the capability to charge the electronic devices efficiently and effectively, and doesn't require the device to be in the line of transfer of power. These standards for wireless charging technology are expected to be released by 2015.
