Abstract

The U.S. market accounts for the largest share of global revenues for small joint implants. Growth will be influenced by the adoption of products that have only been available overseas, the preference for motion-preserving technologies over fusion, and challenges with respect to reimbursement and regulatory factors.

New product introductions could have a significant impact on the U.S. market. Reverse shoulder replacements have recently become available, which expand the treatable population to include individuals with severe rotator cuff damage. Renewed interest in ankle replacements and the potential introduction of the first mobile-bearing devices in the U.S. could result in a shift towards ankle replacements over fusions in selected patients.

While challenges with respect to reimbursement and healthcare costs will have an impact on revenues, sales growth is expected to remain strong through 2015 due to the rising prevalence of conditions that affect the small joints. This report examines the market for replacement, fixation, and fusion implants for the shoulder, elbow, wrist, fingers, ankle and foot, and provides a detailed analysis of the clinical and economic factors driving the market.
